St Malo is just as pretty by night as by day. These massive ramparts surrounding the old town date back to the 12th century, perhaps built in part to prevent the pesky British from trying to take the city. Much of St Malo was destroyed by Allied bombing during the Second World War and was painstakingly reconstructed stone by stone in the following years. Walking along the city walls at night is very atmospheric and evokes mental images of battles from centuries gone by and hopefully never to be repeated.
